If you choose to tune into the Golden Globes in January of 2018, for once you won’t be greeted with Ricky Gervais cracking a string of inappropriate jokes about Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen. While Gervais will certainly be missed by a fair few, this year, Seth Meyers will step into the spotlight and celebrate this year’s achievements in movies and television.
The nominations have been released and Stranger Things and Dunkirk are both pounding on down the door to bring home one or more of the prestigious awards. Don’t worry, no spoilers ahead!
Stranger Things returned this year for a second season, and the Netflix show is up for two nominations: Best Television Series – Drama and also Best Supporting Actor in a Supporting Role. David Harbour claims a spot in the latter category due to his excellent performances as Police Chief Jim Hopper. In 1980s Hawkins, Indiana, David Harbour manages to play a tough, yet warm father figure for middle schoolers who star in the show. Both of these character traits are essential when a shadow monster invades the town from an alternate dimension.
Dark, mysterious, complex, and wildly entertaining, it’s no surprise that Stranger Things has received high marks among critics.
Dunkirk smashed it with three nominations for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director – Motion Picture, and Best Original Score – Motion Picture. Somehow, Director Christopher Nolan continues to match the expectations set by his films The Dark Knight, Inception, and Interstellar. A maestro of conveying disaster, nothing is more terrifying in this film than the sharp revving of German planes cutting through the air to attack Allied Forces during World War II. Nolan’s film is only enhanced by Harry Styles’ stellar performance as a soldier retreating in Dunkirk, France and Hans Zimmer’s world-class soundtrack, for which he earned a nomination.
The Golden Globes ceremony will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The show begins at 5 PM Pacific Standard Time on January 7th 2018.
